The Scope of Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES) and How ERP Software Can Help in the Execution
by
Jamie Shellman
Enterprise resource planning (ERP) is directly related but not considered synonymous to manufacturing execution system (MES) in that the latter covers the manufacturing processes while the former accounts information used in those processes. ERP software is integrated into the MES to synchronize accounting and inventory with the different manufacturing operations. This strengthens the monitoring scheme implemented, thereby reducing risks and losses. Understanding the scope of MES and how ERP software can help improve the efficiency of performing each step contributes to proper management and to fast increase in revenue.
Managing resources and product definitions. This part of the system focuses on the production phase. Product definitions include product rules, bills generated during production, process set points, and storage, while managing resources include matching resources with production demands based on capabilities and availability. Monitoring all these information manually is not ideal at all. Automation using ERP software helps better synchronize monitoring with the processes and organize and make information available for any functional systems connected to the MES.
Scheduling. This part of the system determines the time and cost efficiency of the production. While a well-defined course of actions contributes much in achieving the production goals, it cannot work without proper scheduling. This is the only part of the system where ERP provides and does not accept information to be processed. Scheduling is made through the ERP and incorporated in the MES for execution. In that way, overlapping and delays in the execution of steps will be prevented, thereby increasing productivity.
Sending off and carrying out of orders. Each step involved in the production process requires runs and work orders based from the previous step. Such a system promotes continuity in the process and fast manufacture of products. As the orders are finalized and sent off from one step to another, the MES along with the ERP

Gathering and performance analysis of production data. This is required in all forms of production process as it allows manufacturers and managers to review, interpret, and analyze data to create better strategies for development.
